The Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) seek candidates for a position as assistant or associate professor. This is a tenure-ladder position, with the academic rank to be determined in accordance with the successful candidate's experience and productivity. The successful candidate will have a joint appointment in the Department of Society, Human Development, and Health at HSPH and in the Center for Community-Based Research in the Division of Population Sciences at DFCI. A core theme for research conducted in the Center for Community-Based Research is understanding the role of the social environment in cancer prevention and control.

Candidates should have a background in one or more of the following: community-based approaches to cancer prevention and control; health communications; cancer prevention in workplaces; dissemination research; and organizations and systems related to cancer prevention. Experience working with socioeconomically disadvantaged, racial/ethnic minorities, and/or new immigrant populations is also desirable, as are strong research methods skills (quantitative and/or qualitative). Potential/demonstrated success in grant-funded research will be a strong consideration. Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in any of the following fields: psychology, sociology, public health, organizational development, communication science, a related field within the social and behavioral sciences, or a professional doctoral degree in medicine or nursing.

The successful candidate will teach and advise students in the doctoral and master's programs in the Department of Society, Human Development, and Health, and will mentor postdoctoral fellows. The successful candidate will be a member of DFCI's Division of Population Sciences, which includes three major research programs (cancer outcomes, genetics/high-risk populations, and community-based prevention research), and of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, whose disease programs offer many collaborative opportunities. Numerous additional opportunities exist for interdisciplinary and collaborative work between HSPH, DFCI, and Harvard's other teaching hospitals. This position includes a highly competitive compensation and start-up package.

The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Health Communications and Cancer faculty positions

The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks junior, mid-career and senior level candidates for tenure-track faculty positions in cancer-related health communication. This broad-based recruitment seeks outstanding researchers in areas, including but not limited to: new media, message development, medical decision making, cancer survivorship and health disparities. The positions are supported in part by the University Cancer Research Fund, which this year provides $40 million for cancer research at UNC Chapel Hill. The University of Iowa, College of Public Health

Head, Department of Community and Behavioral Health

The University Of Iowa College Of Public Health seeks a dedicated and experienced leader for the Head of the Department of Community and Behavioral Health. The Department Head serves as the departmental executive officer and reports directly to the Dean of the College. The successful candidate will facilitate the growing national reputation of the Department in research, service, and teaching, and will work closely with other academic units and state and community partners to foster interdisciplinary collaboration. It is presumed that the new Head will be appointed at the level of Professor with Tenure.

The College of Public Health, established in 1999, has grown to include 82 full-time faculty positions and over 425 graduate students. The annual revenues in FY07 were more than $60 million, of which $45 million was from external research funding. The College of Public Health has five departments; Community and Behavioral Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Management and Policy, and Occupational and Environmental Health. Dr. Susan Curry, an internationally recognized public health researcher and inspiring academic leader, joined the College as Dean in August, 2008. The College has a very successful fundraising campaign underway and will complete a new, state-of-the-art college building in fall, 2010. The College offers a collaborative, high-energy culture, and engages with many academic, government, and community partners.

The Department of Community and Behavioral Health was the only new Department created with the establishment of the new College of Public Health in 1999. As the newest Department, CBH has 11 primary faculty, 52 students, and $4.2 million in research funding. The Department excels in research and teaching in the areas of smoking cessation and prevention, alcohol/drug abuse and dependence, health communication, mental health, community development and empowerment, injury prevention, obesity, public health program evaluations, and youth risk behaviors. The Department excels in developing, evaluating, and disseminating evidence-based practices including community-level interventions. In addition to our degrees in community and behavioral health (MPH, MS, and PhD), CBH offers graduate degree subtracts in health communication, maternal, child, and family health, nutrition and exercise, addiction studies, and occupational injury prevention research. The department currently houses four research centers: the CDC funded Prevention Research Center, the SAMHSA funded Prairieland Addiction Technology Transfer Center, the Iowa Tobacco Research Center, and the Center for Health Communication and Social Marketing.

Candidates for head of the Department of Community and Behavioral Health must have a PhD, DrPH, or an MD (with an MPH preferred), and at least 5 years of academic experience in a community health and/or behavioral/social science discipline relevant to public health. A record of research productivity, including extramural funding, and teaching experience are required. The candidate must demonstrate leadership and administrative ability, evidence of collaborative efforts in teaching and/or research, and a record of community service. The candidate must also demonstrate knowledge of effective strategies for working with diverse faculty, staff, and students, and a commitment to promoting a diverse environment.

Description of Position: The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University in Pullman, WA seeks a full time, 9-month academic year, tenure-track communication faculty at the assistant professor rank. Appointment begins August 16, 2009. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in persuasion and strategic communication campaigns, conducting a successful program of research, and service to the College and University. Preference will be given to candidates whose research addresses social issues and social problems. The successful candidate also will be expected to advise undergraduate and graduate students.

The University of Arkansas Department of Communication is seeking a tenure-track assistant professor with research interests in organizational, small group, and/or interpersonal communication. While not necessary, additional expertise in health communication will be considered a plus.

The Department is seeking a scholar who will engage students and colleagues while producing a challenging research program. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Communication and be able to teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses in their interest area as well as courses in research methods and communication theory. Kern Professor in Communications, an endowed professorship, beginning 1 September 2009.

This is a senior-level appointment for a negotiable 2-5 year term with the possibility of renewal for a second term. The Kern Professor will bring exceptional experience and a national presence to the Department and campus. The Kern Professor is expected to enhance the national prominence of the Department and its students through such activities as: sponsorship of high-profile conferences and colloquia, writing and receiving research grants, and enhancing and expanding the Department's curricular and research profiles. The Kern Professor teaches three communication courses a year.

Among the Department's current curricular and research interests are digital media, advertising and media campaigns, visual communication, health communication, technical communication, journalism and media economics. The Department offers three degrees (a BS in Professional & Technical Communication, a BS in Advertising & Public Relations and an MS in Communication & Media Technologies) serving 250 majors. The Department also serves all RIT students with minors in communication and in journalism as well as offers communication courses that meet general education requirements.

The Jack J. Valenti School of Communication at the University of Houston seeks a social scientist specializing in Health Communication with an emphasis in health care delivery across interpersonal, group, multi-cultural, and/or organizational domains. The Department of Health Behavior and Health Education at the University of Michigan School of Public Health seeks candidates for the position of Assistant Professor. The start date for this tenure-track position is September 1, 2009.

We seek candidates with expertise in mass media and public health education who have strong methodological skills in experimental design and intervention research. Candidates who focus on communicating health messages through traditional media channels (e.g., television, radio, print) as well as more cutting edge E-technologies ( e.g., web 2.0, cell phones, PDA, etc.) are especially encouraged to apply. The Department has several senior faculty members with an interest in health communications research that spans a wide range of health content areas. The successful candidate will have extensive opportunities to collaborate with these faculty members as well as other faculty across the university.

Job Description: RTI's Health Communications Program is has an immediate opening for a Sr. Health Communications Analyst.

Responsibilities: Leading and providing scientific guidance to research studies related to health communication and social marketing. Projects may involve message and product/intervention development and pre-testing, the oversight of data collection and analysis tasks, preparation of technical reports and articles for submission to professional journals

Key responsibilities will include: Leading grant /contract proposals for federal agencies and private Foundations with a goal to obtain research funding for new grants and contracts. Promotion of both qualitative and quantitative approaches to studying health communications. Developing motivating, mentoring, and providing supervision to mid- and junior-level research staff; Provide leadership and vision in further developing health communications and social marketing research within RTI.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in communications, psychology, sociology, public health, or a related field combined with substantial experience conducting research in health communications. Applicants must demonstrate a successful record of obtaining competitive funding and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Experience analyzing large survey data and/or administrative data is highly desirable.
